Jess: Non avevo un forte interesse per le motociclette prima di iniziare a imparare. Jess: Percorrere la Dempster Highway fino all'Oceano Artico è stato il giro più memorabile che abbia mai fatto. In generale, preferisco le strade di montagna che offrono ampie vedute panoramiche mentre si affrontano le curve. Quando la strada è non asfaltata e ti tiene concentrato, le fugaci visioni del panorama che riesci a cogliere diventano quasi un premio.
Dato che viaggio con la mia cagnolina, le tortuose strade di montagna sono migliori anche per lei, in quanto la velocità è più lenta rispetto all'autostrada e ci sono più cose da vedere e odori su cui può concentrarsi. La mia prima cagnolina, il pastore tedesco Moxie, amava le montagne perché c'erano sempre creature da annusare e inseguire una volta fuori dal suo trasportino! Anche Whimsy, il mio pastore svizzero, ama le montagne perché di solito fa più fresco e, dato che ha il pelo lungo, preferisce le temperature più fredde!
- Consiglia una strada o una destinazione imperdibile per gli appassionati di moto. Perché questo luogo è così speciale per te?
Jess: La sezione superiore della Ruta 40 in Argentina è sia un'ottima esperienza di guida che un paesaggio mozzafiato. Quasi completamente non asfaltata, inizia dal confine con la Bolivia e corre verso sud lungo l'intera Argentina. A motorcyclist who transformed her passion into an adventure: Jess Stone. After learning to ride a motorcycle so as not to miss a unique and unrepeatable opportunity, Jess transformed that experience into an even more ambitious project: traveling the world by motorcycle with her inseparable travel companion: her dog Whimsy, comfortably settled in the Moto Cockpit.
- Introduce yourself and share the story of your journey into the world of motorcycles. What sparked your interest?
Jess: I didn’t have a strong interest in motorcycles before I started learning. I had ridden on the back numerous times in Africa, where I was working as an international aid worker, using them as motorcycle taxis to get around. But I had no true desire to ride one myself. That is until my boyfriend at the time told me that he was saving up to complete a North to South America motorcycle trip the following year. A few years prior, he had ridden from Los Angeles to Panama and then ran out of money so he couldn’t complete the leap to South America. He always dreamed he would complete the full journey, and he made up his mind that 2013 was going to be the year to do it. So, I had two choices. I could let him follow through on his dream and meet him a year later once he accomplished his goal. Or I could come along. But Greg was clear. He didn’t want a pillion for this adventure, he wanted to ride solo. He’d love to have me join, but I’d have to learn how to ride my own motorcycle. And so, I did.
- Describe your favourite motorcycle ride. What type of scenery do you find most exciting?
Jess: Riding the Dempster Highway to the Arctic Ocean was the most memorable ride I’ve taken. It’s almost 800km of gravel and dirt roads through the Canadian wilderness to reach the indigenous village of Tuktoyaktuk. It takes you through the impressive Tombstone mountains and over the Arctic tundra. It took 3 days to ride north, and we camped in old gravel quarries on the way. We had challenging road conditions where construction crews had recently laid down new rock aggregate, making it feel like you were riding over large marbles. When we reached the Arctic Ocean, we pitched our tent along the shore and enjoyed the nearly 24 hours of sunlight. On the way south, we hit rain making the dirt roads into a slippery mess causing us to pull off on the side of the road and call it a day.

Since I ride with my dog, the twisty mountain roads are also better for her since it’s a slower speed than on the freeway and more sights and smells that she can focus on. My first dog, German shepherd Moxie, loved the mountains as there were always creatures that she could sniff after and chase once she was out of her Cockpit! Whimsy, my Swiss shepherd, also likes the mountains as it is normally cooler and since she is long coated, she prefers the colder temperatures!
- Share your best recommendation for a must-visit road or destination for motorcycle enthusiasts. Why is this place so special for you?
Jess: The top section of Ruta 40 in Argentina is both an excellent ride and stunning scenery. Almost completely unpaved, it starts from the border of Bolivia and runs south through the length of Argentina. The road passes through riverbeds which fill in the rainy season so the ideal time to go is during the dry season when the riverbeds are mostly empty and create a decent technical challenge.
On the northern part of the route, you’ll see more llamas than vehicles. The landscape is barren but a spectacular red color that you don’t often see. As you continue south, you get into the tourist and wine regions of the country, including Mendoza. Further south you’ll hit the terrible Los Malditos 73. It’s a 73km section of Ruts 40 that has patches of deep gravel and extremely strong crosswinds at times (60km/h).
Ruta 40 has both challenging sections and beautiful vastness which makes for a tremendous ride!
- Take us into your garage. What motorcycle is parked there, and how do you use it? Is it for short rides or your trusted companion for epic journeys?
Jess: I ride a 2023 Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro motorcycle. It’s currently custom painted purple. It’s my only source of transportation and I use it for everything, including riding around the world with my Swiss shepherd, Whimsy, on the back in her K9 Moto Cockpit to raise $100k for the global nonprofit Girl Up!
- Dream destinations await. If you could hop on your motorcycle and explore any place in the world, where would you go next?
Jess: I’m very fortunate to say that I’m on an around the world adventure with my shepherd Whimsy. We have been on the road together for 2 years completing the length of the Americas. Next, we will be off to Africa and then continuing further East. I’m very excited to return to Africa, especially to South Sudan. This time it won’t be as an aid worker but as a traveler on my motorcycle with my dog.
- Putting on the helmet is a ritual for every rider. What goes through your mind when you gear up, start your bike, and hit the road?
Jess: Since I ride with my dog, it’s not just my personal ritual that I go through but the routine of getting Whimsy saddled up into her Cockpit. I generally have Whimsy leap up into her Cockpit, harness her in and put on her goggles first. Then I put my helmet and gloves on and we are ready to go.
I think about being present every time I get going. Being focused on what I’m doing since it’s not only me on the bike, but also my dog too. Riding with Whimsy brings a lot of attention which often has people pulling up beside us to take photos and videos when we are riding down the interstate. This makes me hyperaware of how I’m riding since the onlookers are often so excited to see Whimsy and just want to get closer and closer, I need to be very focused on my ride and safety.
- Do you have a preferred motorcycle model or type? How does it contribute to improving your riding experience?
Jess: I love having a dual sport motorcycle. This allows me to confidently go off road to places off the beaten path and to have a comfortable ride when I need to make up time on the freeway or interstate. While the Tiger 900 isn’t a light motorcycle, it’s surprisingly nimble on the dirt roads and has tremendous speed when I need it.
- Share the story of the coolest and most unconventional motorcycle you've ever had the pleasure of riding. What made it memorable?
Jess: To be honest, I’ve only ridden a handful of motorcycles in my lifetime. I learned on a 160cc TVS Apache then upgraded to my BMW G650GS. After 9 years on the BMW, I switched to my current Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro. I love to ride, but I love to ride the motorcycle that I own most!
